The Dongria Saree is a rare textile crafted from coarse organic cotton, woven by the Dongria Kondh people of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts in Odisha. The Dongria Kondh are Indigenous Peoples who reside in the plateaus of the Niyamgiri hill ranges in India’s Odisha state. They possess magical weaving skills based on geographical weave patterns developed through an embroidery technique. The primary yarn colors used in these sarees are green, yellow, and red, which hold deep symbolic value. The sarees appear like an embroidered kapdagonda, with matching colors and patterns, and take 4-5 days, minimum, to 8 days to produce a single piece. This Dongria Saree is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides protection from the cold.
