geographical indication

Geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or other characteristics that are essentially attributable to that origin. GI helps to promote and protect products that are unique to a particular region, by preventing unauthorized use of the name or misleading consumers about the origin of the product.

For example, Roquefort cheese can only be produced in a specific region of France and must meet certain criteria to be labeled as such. Similarly, Champagne can only be called such if it is produced in the Champagne region of France and meets certain production standards.

Geographical indications are important for protecting local economies and preserving cultural traditions associated with specific products. They can also help to promote sustainable agriculture and protect the environment by encouraging producers to use traditional, environmentally-friendly production methods.
