Kotpad handloom is a traditional handloom weaving technique that originated in the Kotpad village of the Koraput district in the Indian state of Odisha. The technique involves weaving cotton fabrics using natural dyes made from the roots of the Aal or Indian Madder plant, which gives the fabric its distinct red color.
Kotpad handloom fabrics are known for their unique texture, durability, and earthy hues. They are also eco-friendly, as the natural dyes used in the process are non-toxic and biodegradable. The fabrics are used to create a range of products, including sarees, scarves, stoles, and home furnishings.
The Kotpad handloom industry has a rich history, dating back over 500 years. However, the industry faced a decline in the mid-20th century due to competition from cheaper machine-made fabrics. To revive the industry, the government of Odisha has implemented several initiatives, including the establishment of a Kotpad Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society and the promotion of the Kotpad handloom brand at national and international trade fairs.
Today, Kotpad handloom fabrics are highly valued for their unique beauty and craftsmanship, and they continue to be an important part of Odisha’s cultural heritage.
